Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by the protected Peninsula watershed. The meeting took place at a giant 20th-century estate built by a family that made its fortune in the gold rush. It is set among the hills, one of the more isolated spots in a densely populated corner of California. Dani adds that Filoli is also focused on providing a greater narrative around water. Spring is when the majority of flowers are blooming, including tulips, wisteria, camelias, and magnolias! Staff prepared as many as nine meals a day in the massive Kitchen, which boasts a 17-foot-high coved ceiling to help keep the room cool after hours of continuous cooking. For those who prefer outdoor concerts to hiking, the 20th annual Jazz at Filoli series begins June 27. On Sunday afternoons through September 26, performers will take to Filoli’s birch- and dogwood-shaded outdoor stage. The Roths, Salyards says, wanted the estate to be a place of horticulture significance, where people could visit and learn about the astounding aspects of nature. Before her death, Lurline ensured that would happen, refusing to sell the estate and instead agreeing to put it in the hands of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The largest gardens are working gardens for the production of cut flowers for the mansion and for the growing of some vegetables. The house was built in 1917 by William Bowers Bourn, a San Francisco millionaire whose wealth came from gold mining. Construction of the large property took two years, while it took another 12 years to complete the formal gardens, which were completed in 1929.

You can walk through it or hang out at one of the small tables on either side of it next to the brick walls.
